Spotlight on Crocodiles for Reptile Awareness Day 2020
We're celebrating Reptile Awareness Day 2020 (20th October) by shining a spotlight on the largest and heaviest of our planet's living reptiles, Crocodiles. Known as formidable predators, these incredible creatures can reach lengths of up to 6 metres and weigh in excess of 1,000 kg.
The Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) has one of the strongest bites in the animal world, thanks to its extremely powerful jaws and strong teeth, which can measure up to 13 cm. As well as providing a strong bite, Crocodile jaws are also ten times more sensitive to touch than human fingertips. When they are in still water, they can detect the vibrations of a wildebeest drinking from 20 metres away! Once their prey is detected, Crocodiles can move very rapidly in water, using their powerful tails to swim at speeds of up to 20 mph and make sudden lunges out of the water.
